The corn bunting is not only Austria's Bird of the Year 2024, but also the first motif in the new "Native Birds" series.
This series, created in cooperation with BirdLife Austria, presents endangered native bird species. The inconspicuous corn bunting, the largest native bunting, is acutely threatened with extinction as its habitat is being increasingly restricted by intensive agricultural use. It needs open cultivated landscapes with flower-rich fallow land, small shrubs and individual bushes as hiding places as well as individual taller trees as a singing platform. In Austria, there are only a few small breeding territories left, mainly in the east of the country, for example in Hanság (Waasen) on the border between Burgenland and Hungary. More uncultivated areas, field margins and ditches as well as additional and expanded nature reserves could still prevent the corn bunting from dying out and also help other native birds.
